Oldboy Movie Review

Oldboy (A)

Length: - 1 hr. 44 min.

Oldboy is an American remake of 2003 South Korean mystery thriller by the same name. This one is also pretty much similar to the old film which makes it less enjoyable. If you saw the old film chances are higher you may not equally enjoy this one. Bollywood has also made an unauthorized remake of Oldboy in 2006 with some of the necessary changes; climax of the film was almost changes. American Oldboy seems to be much faster in pace; sometimes more than required. Film has been shortened in length from 140 minutes to 103 minutes probably which had made it worst.

In 1993 Joe Dowett (Josh Brolin) was mysteriously imprisoned for as many as 20 years. He is not allowed to contact anyone and forced to eat the same food every day. When he is being released in 2013; he tries to find out who did this and why. Joe takes the help of Marie (Elizabeth Olsen) and an old friend Chucky (Michael Imperiol). Joe tries to torture the prison owner Chaney (Samuel L. Jackson) but doesnot get much information from him. The stranger meets Joe himself and confess that he did this to him. He also says that he has his daughter and for getting her, he needs to find out the motive behind the same imprisonment.

There are moments in the film but they doesn’t last long. Climax of the film is good and satisfying, but rest of the film is less enjoyable. Oldboy has revenge as its theme, it’s not for the kind hearted person. What’s wrong here is an old product with a new and fresh packaging, which makes it hard to sell. Blowing off head or cutting body parts is the kind of brutality shown in the film. If, you already saw the previous  film its hard to see it again even in the remake with similar plot.
